Asbestos Encapsulation & Repair
If your building has asbestos it is not always removal that is needed. If the asbestos is in good condition or just needs some small repairs then encapsulation can sometimes be the better solution. The dangers of fibre release from asbestos are now well known. Clearly, there is a need to take safety measures to prevent it from occurring. Under current Health & Safety Executive (HSE) regulations, if the asbestos is in good condition, an in place management plan is an option. Too frequently, however, the asbestos is left in place, unprotected.
Everyone who has asbestos needs a management plan. Within this management plan encapsulation can be included. Reasons to encapsulate rather than remove are varied but here are a few examples:
- Better for the environment
- The area where the asbestos is may be inaccessible
- Removal needs to have areas vacated whereas encapsulation can be performed without evacuation
- The sealing of the asbestos reduces the health risk
- In most instances it is a cheaper option
Encapsulating is a method of covering the asbestos with high performance coatings to protect against further ageing degradation, movement (vibration) or accidental knocks and scrapes. In many instances this is a one time treatment.
Removal is an alternative but there are many factors that have to be taken into account. It is high risk for contamination which is why experienced personnel are required; there is a high cost of disposal for the asbestos.
Encapsulation moves you away from these situations by keeping the asbestos in a safe and controlled condition.
